A Hollister resident was killed Saturday after her car struck a tree on Highway 101 near Gilroy.

Ofelia C. Rodriguez, 46, was northbound when she lost control of her vehicle, a 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier. The car struck a tree, trapping her inside. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

There was no alcohol involved in the single-car crash reported at 5:48 a.m. Saturday, but it is still under investigation, said Chris Armstrong, public information officer for the California Highway Patrol’s area office.

Rodriguez was driving in the right lane on Highway 101 just north of Highway 25. She changed lanes, but when her car crossed over the double-yellow line, she over-corrected to the right, Armstrong said.

The car slid clockwise into the shoulder, hitting a tree on the driver’s side and trapping Rodriguez inside the car, Armstrong said.

Witnesses called the CHP, which responded. Rodriguez was pronounced dead at the scene, Armstrong said. She was wearing her seatbelt.
