Dear Editor,
I applaud your airing of the Mallard Fillmore comic strip opposing the “Get out and Vote” exhortation for people who don’t know the issues. I believe the founding fathers established the electoral college for just this reason. They wanted to winnow out the voters who didn’t know the issues.
Today, we have many voters who do not read the newspapers or watch TV news. If they are registered they could read their mail. But how many do?
I don’t know if they sway the election for the right or the left but I suspect that it is more to the left.
By the way, I have been a devotee of your crossword puzzle since coming to Hollister in 1982. At first I didn’t recognize it as the NY Times puzzle. Now I do it mainly on Friday and Saturday because they are the hardest ones. On Sunday I do it in the Mercury News.
I approve of your recent emphasis on local news, which I think should be your forte. I recognize your challenge from the Pinnacle. But they are a weekly and who wants to read old news? I think you should publish on Monday too.
