Editor,
Photographs of recent demonstrations supposedly against immigration reform show hundreds to hundreds of thousands of Hispanics displaying the Mexican flag. There is a movement to return the U.S. southwest to Mexico. Is this what all of these demonstrations are really about? The big discussion in this county should not be a about immigration reform but about reformation in Mexico.
Have not the great majority of the legal and illegal immigrants to this country from Mexico come for freedom and prosperity? Mexico is a country of poverty, crime and political, social and religious corruption. Who can blame the millions who have fled and who want to flee Mexico for the United States? The immigrants to the United States are saying that Mexico cannot be reformed but should be abandoned.
Returning the American southwest to Mexico will only increase the geographic area of poverty, crime and corruption under Mexican control. The United States is a great place to live. The demonstrators should be proud to be in the United States and be proudly flying the American flag and proudly acknowledge what is being provided for them in the country and protest that it is not being provided in Mexico.
America is a great country because our founders, following leaders and freedom loving people established liberty and government that allows a pluralistic society. There are the leaders that should be honored. Not the past and present leaders of Mexico who have left Mexico as a place to flee from.
The United States today is a product of a long history of reformation and revolution and more reformation. A history that started long before Europeans came to the western would. Mexico has had revolution but no reformation. Mexico is in desperate need of reformation that will rid her of poverty, crime and corruption. Now is the time for honorable and brave Mexicans to stand and say enough to the old way and fight for true reformation and liberty in Mexico.
