Dear Editor,

In reference to the “SJB Forum Draws A Crowd” article in the Oct. 15 edition of the Free Lance, I would like to address the most important issue and the one that has not been addressed concerning the Indian casino.

I have been open minded about the pros and cons in regards to the proposed casino. I can not make an arbitrary decision that may penalize a segment of our population without first weighing all facts related to the casino issue.

I want the citizens of San Benito County to know that no matter what I personally feel is right or wrong about this, the decision will be made by the voters of California on Nov. 2, when they vote on Propositions 1A, 68 and 70. In addition, this issue of a casino in San Benito County will not be determined by any elected body or official in either the city or the county.

Bottom line, casino decisions in our county will be determined by federal laws and most directly by the governor of our state. It has not been a case of my not being able to make a decision, but the ability to gather information in all fairness to make a conclusive decision that is just and fair for all parties.

Please always remember, this is a Democracy and it is important that we have responsive and responsible representation.

There will be a public information meeting on Indian gaming in San Benito County at 1:30pm on Oct. 21 at the Veterans Memorial Building. I will be attending and encourage all interested residents to also attend.
