Paul Matulich received the good news this week that he was chosen as the newly appointed San Benito County Agriculture Commissioner. Matulich, who has lived in the county and been involved with agriculture for the past 38 years, will be taking over for his good friend and colleague Mark Tognazzini.
Tognazzini, who is retiring, held the top spot as commissioner for the last 19 years. Currently, Matulich serves as the deputy agriculture commissioner.
Matulich has worked with Tognazzini since he began working in the county in 1966 and is sad to see his longtime friend go.
“We worked together for 38 years, so it’s going to be a little strange not seeing him around,” he said.
The position is appointed by the Board of Supervisors and has a four-year term. The salary will remain at roughly $84,000 a year.
“It’s great to know the Board of Supervisors holds a lot of trust in me, and it will be nice after all these years to finish up my career in the top position,” he said.
County Supervisor Reb Monaco said Matulich is very qualified for the position.
“He is very popular and well known with the ranchers and farmers in the community, and he obviously has a great deal of support,” he said.
Matulich will officially take on his new title April 19.
