THUMBS UP: Culture shines during rodeo week

San Benito County’s most traditional hometown event is around the corner, and there are plenty of worthwhile activities for families throughout the weekend. It all starts at 6:15 p.m. Thursday with the annual parade and fiesta along San Benito Street, featuring rodeo-related floats and participants along with business entries and an array of entertainment. Saddle Horse Show & Rodeo events start Friday night and run through Sunday and includes such staples as bronc and bull riding, barrel races and team roping. But there are several new events this year, too, such as CHECK. It will be the 76th annual Saddle Horse Show & Rodeo, and the event keeps getting better each year. If you’re looking for an exciting, inexpensive attraction with a plethora of local talent, head on out to Bolado Park this weekend.

THUMBS UP: Agencies partner to nab criminals

Two local agencies joined with a state agency in arresting eight suspected criminals during a seven-hour operation June 12 within Hollister city limits. The Hollister Police Department and San Benito County Probation Department joined with the California Department of Corrections in conducting the joint operation. They nabbed the eight suspects in an attempt to stop local violence and gang activity. The arrests send a message to gang members and other violent criminals that local agencies and law enforcement leaders are willing to cooperate with one another and do what it takes to rid our streets of lawbreaking scoundrels.
