HOLLISTER
Supervisors this week heard from Acting Public Works Director Janelle Cox and members of the public regarding the idea of turning the abandoned Southside Convalescent Hospital into the permanent, year-round location for a homeless shelter.
Supervisors discussed the possibility but did not take action, other than requesting more details.
“This is not a seasonal problem,” Supervisor Anthony Botelho said. “It’s a year-round issue.”
The facility would work well because it features many bathrooms and small rooms and is equipped with a fire sprinkler system. Even if the site isn’t considered, the county still would have to pay for hazardous waste removal of asbestos and lead. County Administrative Officer Susan Thompson said hazardous waste removal will cost $10,500.
Supervisor Pat Loe pointed out how a study must be conducted regardless and that officials cannot move forward until that happens.
Local architect David Huboi spoke during public comment, meanwhile, and said the project could be a serviceable building for the county, adding that it could also house the transitional housing occupants.
In other action Tuesday:
An official told supervisors this week that county hours – 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday – need more flexibility.
The board Tuesday heard a presentation from Assistant County Administrative Officer Rich Inman regarding the hours of operation for San Benito County offices.
Inman said the hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. were established in 1974 and need more flexibility. “The board should amend that ordinance to allow for county office hours to be established by resolution,” Inman said.
The board will consider a resolution to have the flexibility to change office hours as needed at the March 3 meeting.
