It’s so bizarre. Here I sit, looking out my window at rolling hills glistening in the morning dew that saturates blades of new grass stretching towards the sun, begging for light so they will live.

The world appears to be wearing a smile.

Meanwhile, the new year rolls in and the beast of burden weighs upon our world, threatening human life at catastrophic levels.

CNN lambastes the airwaves with the fate of soldiers being deployed by the thousands, and following close behind is the first hospital ship. That’s a comforting thought, though not a welcome one.

As if to lighten the mood, CNN then gives us a sound bite of Saddam Hussein’s brilliant statement to the world: he thinks the U.N. weapons inspectors are “spies.”

OF COURSE, ya dumb folk! Who the hell else are you going to send in? A priest, a reporter who covers the cop beat, some diplomat who knows squat about building plans or bomb-making?

But then, maybe the U.N. inspectors went through a crash course in Weapons 101 at the local McDonald’s in Kuwait, where – and I’m not making this up – huge posters hang on doors with actual photos of bombs, guns and other war paraphernalia. The grim toys of destruction to battle a Big Mac attack?

Still wondering whether my son will have to go back to the Persian Gulf and how many parents and grandparents in San Benito County have family members heading for the Gulf. It’s not hard to explain how they’re feeling because all anyone would have to do is listen to what they avoid saying or avoid doing.

My son recently gave me all of his photos and said that I could have them. That disturbed me and I refused. He has also inquired about making out his will. How many 22-year-olds do you know who are thinking of writing out a will? I’m sure most who do are in the military.

What it comes down to is the “new world order” regime that began when the United Nations was formed after World War II.

When I was a young child of 7 or so I first heard that phrase delivered by Winston Churchill in one of those old black-and-white newsreel clips, “new world order.” I shuddered then as I do now.

Yes, Americans are hated overseas. Yes, America looks like the big bully because we are.

Do you want China, Korea, Iraq or other nations who are behind the times enforcing their rules on our individual freedom? Certainly not, but one day there will be new world order beyond the United Nations role capacity. Even religious leaders of many denominations meet annually to discuss the “world’s” progress – sort of like keeping an eye on the beast.

Rules are broken, rewritten and followed. New rules come with a new world order, but who determines the rules are those with the issues and the U.S has plenty of issues, as do Korea, Iraq, Iran…

Whether we like it or not we have to take sides, and frankly, I would rather impose my house rules then be subject to another set of rules that strike a blow for individual freedom. As far as I would rule, shove freedom right down their throat because sometimes even a baby has to be force-fed before it learns what’s good for it.

Oh yeah, another thing that irked me – tax cuts for people with stock dividends. What about the middleman, the guy who can’t afford stock options, the couple who can’t afford to buy a house? That’s a stimulas package for you. If I were president, everyone would have a house.

Are we smiling yet?
