Editor,
The Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts of San Benito will be “Scouting for Food” on Saturday, Feb. 11 for benefit of the Community Pantry. Bags will be distributed the week before and they ask that you set out your donation by your front door by 9am on that day. It may take them a while to get to you, but they’ll start collecting the bags early! Food suggestions are canned fruit and vegetables, soups and stews, tuna and peanut butter. Cans or plastic only, please. They are also collecting clean paper or plastic grocery bags to help us with our food distribution.
Please take this opportunity to support both the needy in our community and a wonderful group of young people working hard to do good things. It is refreshing to see this positive side of youth. We thank the Scouts and their leaders for this effort!
I would also like to thank our wonderful supporters. I read so much about the new term “donor fatigue” and it’s a serious problem in many areas. Here in our county, you all continue to respond to the need. Our budget is almost in balance! And last year, Community Pantry distributed $1.2 million dollars worth of food to the needy in our community. We also distributed over $300,000 worth of USDA commodities for a total of over $1.5 million.
Thank you San Benito County for caring for the less fortunate among us and keep up the good works.
I also want to thank you for the wonderful opinion piece your paper did about the Pantry’s search for a new home. I believe it gave us additional help from the community, and we are definitely making good progress.
Mary Anne Hughes,
Executive Director, Community Pantry of
San Benito County
