Air Force Airman Leonel G. Lopez graduated from basic military
training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.
The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that
included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force
core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and
skills.
Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an
associate’s degree in applied science through the Community College
of the Air Force.
He is the nephew of Roxanna and Mark A. Stephens of Fairhaven
Drive, in Hollister.
Lopez is a 2009 graduate of San Benito High School.

Rodriguez makes Dean’s List

Hollister resident and Azusa Pacific University student Amber M. Rodriguez made the academic Deans’ List at APU. Rodriguez, a nursing major, is honored for a fall semester 2009 academic standing of 3.5 or better grade-point average. Rodriguez is joined by more than 1,565 other students receiving the same honor.

Local student participates in summer STEM program

Sarah Rosa, a student at San Juan School, will participate in the U.S. Naval Academy’s Summer STEM Program. The program is an overnight academic camp designed for rising eighth and 11th grade students in good academic standing who have an interest in math and science. Approximately 375 students from around the country have been selected to participate in the program.

It gives students the opportunity to experience real-life applications of math and science principles through hands-on practical learning. Students will learn from distinguished Naval Academy professors in world-class lab facilities that provide a unique learning environment outside the traditional classroom.

The Academy’s current students, known as Midshipmen, help run the program. They act as tutors and counselors to the students.

Covarrubias named All-American Scholar

Alondra Covarrubias, of Hollister, has been named an All-American Scholar by the United States Achievement Acadamy. The USAA has established the All-American Scholar Award Program to offer deserved recognition to superior students who excel in the academic disciplines. The All-American Scholars must earn a 3.3 or higher grade point average. Only scholars selected by a school instructor, counselor or other qualified sponsor are accepted.

Covarrubias, who was nominated while she attended Marguerite Maze Middle School, was nominated by Shari Vanderpool. Covarrubias, who now attends Rancho San Justo Middle School, will appear in the All-American Scholar Yearbook, which is published annually.

“Recognizing and supporting our youth is more important than ever before in America’s history,” said George Stevens, the founder of the United States Achievement Academy. “Certainly, students recognized as All-American Scholars should be congratulated and appreciated for their dedication to excellence and achievement.”

The Academy selects scholars upon the recommendation of teachers, coaches, counselors and other qualified sponsors.

Covarrubias, is the daughter of Antonia Colorado, of Hollister. She is the granddaughter of Agripina and Augustin Covarrubias, of Hollister, and Virginia and Antonio Nunez, of Mexico.

Young opera singer performs at Rotary

Shannon McBane recently performed at the Hollister Rotary meeting and luncheon at Ridgemark to promote the “Concert for the Arts,” a benefit for the San Benito Arts Council. McBane sang “Mein glaubiges herze.”

After the event, she posed for a photo with Rotarian Jim Paxton, whose father was an opera singer. Paxton works for the Law Offices of Paxton-O’Brien.

The Concert for the Arts is May 7, from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the San Juan Oaks Golf Club. The White Album Ensemble, a Beatles tribute band, will perform. Tickets are $50 a person and are available at www.sanbenitoarts.org or Postal Graphics.
