Local and state leaders gathered Thursday to commemorate the official transfer of San Benito Street to the city’s jurisdiction.
The long-awaited relinquishment – Caltrans handed over control of the former Highway 25 route and will receive the relatively new bypass in return – occurred earlier this month with an official recording at the county clerk’s office.
Those centrally involved in the long-awaited transition came together to celebrate the change at the San Benito County Clerk’s Office upstairs at the county courthouse.
The former portion of Highway 25 that routed through the core of Hollister is now under control of the city. The state’s official recording a week before the ceremony, though, made the city’s receiving end of the deal official and should give local officials more leeway when planning events on the San Benito Street portion of the former Highway 25.
