Pinnacles National Monument will reinstate its annual measures to protect nesting raptors at the monument today.
Park officials are asking hikers and climbers to refrain from going off designated trails into sensitive areas for the birds. These areas include the High Peaks, the Balconies Cliffs area, Little Pinnacles, Goat Rock, Gargoyle/Piedras Bonitas and the Scout Peak area.
“Without your cooperation in avoiding the advisory areas, this program could not be the success that it is,” said Park Superintendent Cicely Muldoon in a statement.
Last year, eight pairs of prairie falcons living in the monument produced 26 fledglings. The monument also had successful nesting by American Kestrels, Red-tailed Hawks and Golden Eagles.
The specific locations of the sensitive areas is posted at trailheads around the monument, in the Bear Gulch Visitor Center and online at www.nps.gov/pinn.
