Park Hill pipe a danger?
Sometimes an eyesore can serve a great purpose for the community. There is a rusting pipe rising from the ground next to a playground at Park Hill that rests along a metal beam. The pipe is close by the driveway that circles the play area.
At first glance, we were hard-pressed to come up with a reason why the pipe might be important to the city. After a few calls, we discovered the pipe is used by the Hollister Fire Department every year to make sure their equipment is working properly. Underneath the pipe, there is a metal plate that covers a tank of water that holds as much water as a fire truck. Once a year, the fire company heads up to Park Hill and connects their hoses and pump apparatuses to the pipe, according to a local firefighter.
“We run our pumps up to specific pump pressures and gallons per minutes,” the firefighter said. “It’s all in our fire pump manuals.”
Still, the pipe has some sharp, rusty edges and it is in close proximity to the children’s play area. Putting up a fence may not be a plausible solution to keeping kids away from the pipe, since the fire trucks need to get close to it. But maybe a sign warning parents and kids away would make it just a little bit safer.
