Red Ribbon Week is one tool in a comprehensive continuum of prevention activities, and provides an excellent starting point for implementation of community-based prevention efforts. Red Ribbon activities at local schools include: Plant the Promise at R.O. Hardin Elementary School on October 29th. The Promise is to stay drug and alcohol free by making smart and safe decisions. The red bulbs grow and arise as a natural stop sign to drugs and alcohol from entering the school. Also, a Red Ribbon Rally will be held at Marguerite Maze Middle School; Red Ribbon Theme Week at Rancho San Justo Middle School; and, a Red Ribbon Door Decorating Contest at Gabilan Hills Elementary School.
Red Ribbon Week was established by Congress in 1988 to commemorate the work of Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, a Drug Enforcement Administration agent, who was murdered in the line of duty and has come to represent the belief that one person CAN make a difference in the fight against drugs. The Red Ribbon campaign promotes this belief and encourages a drug-free lifestyle and involvement in drug prevention efforts.
