Hollister – The county’s Board of Supervisors gave a preliminary thumbs-up to a residential sprinkler ordinance at its meeting Tuesday. County staff will now prepare the ordinance for approval at a future meeting.

The proposed ordinance would require anyone in unincorporated San Benito County who is building a home or doing major renovations to include a fire sprinkler system. County fire marshal Jim Dellamonica has said the ordinance could save lives and property, as well as lowering homeowners’ insurance fees.

According to Dellamonica, a sprinkler system would add between $3,000 and $5,000 to the cost of a new home.

San Juan Bautista already has a similar ordinance in place, and Dellamonica said Hollister is likely to follow the county’s lead.
