San Juan Bautista council members Tuesday delayed consideration of a new sign ordinance barring such signs as those that are animated, portable or freestanding billboards.
The sign ordinance proposal was the result of discussions starting about two years ago at the planning commission level, City Manager Roger Grimsley said. Council members Tuesday continued the matter to the Nov. 18 meeting.
The new ordinance would regulate such matters as signs of historical significance, signs in varying zones, temporary signs, gas price signs and prohibited signs.
Prohibited signs include portable A-frame signs, internally illuminated signs, animated or moving signs, other portable signs with some exceptions, signs affixed to vehicles unless the vehicle is used for a normal business capacity, signs conflicting with traffic control fixtures, signs creating a safety hazard, signs obstructing doors or windows, posters and similar signs attached to public right-of-ways, signs on public property except those authorized by the city, and freestanding signs such as billboards.
