San Benito County’s ailing unemployed making up nearly 16 percent of the workforce should get a training boost from the federal stimulus package.
San Benito County will benefit from a federal stimulus payment of $744,000 that is intended to go toward training for new-job creation and instruction assistance to laid-off workers in the county. The funds are coming from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, a federal stimulus package intended to create employment and provide workers with training.
The funds were supposed to have been received last week, but now are expected to arrive by the end of this week, said Enrique Arreola, deputy director for the county’s Community Services and Workforce Development agency.
The funds will go not only toward providing jobs for county residents, but also other areas such as job training and job resources.
“It’s not just us providing the jobs,” Arreola said. “We provide the means. We provide the resources. But our goal is to really create good partnerships as we have done for years with local employers, expanding to other employers who have a need and at the same time really utilizing our resources and working with those that are affected at the current time.”
The funds must be spent by June 30, 2011, but according to Arreola, CSWD will be spending the money now.
