What’s up with the weather?
What in the heck is going on with our weather? Where is the
cool, fall weather and where oh where is the rain? It’s pretty hard
to get into the holiday spirit when it’s 90 degrees outside.
Hopefully things will change this week and we’ll get back into a
fall weather pattern.

There was some great football action in King City last week. The girls took to the field last Thursday night in the annual Powder puff game. Some of those from South County taking in the action included J.W. and Candace Brewen and their girls, and Jim and Betty Barrington. The sophomore/junior team was the big winner against the freshmen/senior team this year. The final score was 20-0. Touchdowns were made by Brooke Tavernetti and Mackenzie Salcido and an interception was made by Sierra Jo Sans. The game was very entertaining, but the cheerleaders were almost as entertaining as the girls! Anytime a football player dresses as and tries to be a cheerleader, you can’t help but laugh. The boys did a good job and definitely entertained the crowd.

The KCHS varsity football team ended its season on Friday night with a huge win against Gonzales. Rory Johnsen had an outstanding game as he had three interceptions and ran one back 93 yards for a touchdown. It was such a great play that it even made the highlights on the 11 p.m. news on Channel 8. What a way to end your senior year Rory. We’re proud of you!

Saturday afternoon the KCHS girls’ basketball teams played in their first scrimmage of the season. The junior varsity played each other, while the varsity played a game against former KCHS alumni. Now that was entertaining and very competitive. It was such a good game and so entertaining, it should become a fundraiser next year. With a little advertisement, it would be a great crowd pleaser for the community. The alumni made a great game out of it but the Varsity girls ended up with the win with the final score of 51-54. Some of the alumni playing included Tamra Barrington (who was playing against daughter Mattie), Kanani Barbree, Wendy Davis, Teri Lugert, Nelli Alcantar and Audry Barbree. The alumni were very competitive as they even argued a few of the fouls being called against them, they definitely wanted the win against the younger girls. Tamra ended the game on a fine note by going up for a rebound and shooting for a basket, unfortunately it was at the wrong basket! It was a great game and one I will look forward to next year.

The Salinas Valley Fair Ranch Rodeo took place last Sunday at the Salinas Valley Fairgrounds. Some of those participating from South County included: Kenny, Casey and Colleen Sabin, Hec, Kasey and Taylor Jo Hurley, Andy and Mattie Barrington, J.W. and Emily Brewen, John Brewen, Pat and Alyssa Abercrombie, Wyatt Bourdet, Lacey and Nick Taliaferro, Richie Cofield, David Porteur, Cash Robinson, Todd, Wendy, Sierra Jo and Brody Sans, Cynnie O’Connor and Kanani Barbree, Nessen Schmidt, Val Bassetti, Vern and Jo Ann Scattini, Stacey Schmidt and George Lake, just to name a few.

Congratulations go to Wyatt Bourdett and Andy Barrington for winning the cut N rope, Sandy Silva for winning the team penning, Lee Whitney for winning the steer stopping, Kenny Sabin, Casey Sabin, Nick Taliaferro and Bert Ferrasci for winning the open calf branding, Frank Johnson and Tony Ferrasci for winning the Over-50 calf branding and Lisa and Connie Duncan for winning the ladies calf branding. Alyssa Abercrombie was the big winner in the junior category as she won both the junior team penning and the junior calf branding. She won the team penning with cousins Taylor Jo Hurley and Sierra Jo Sans, and she won the calf branding with Rian Barth. Congratulations Alyssa!

Missing from the day was Jeannie Coefield who was home celebrating her birthday. Happy birthday Jeannie!

Anniversary wishes go out to Vern and Jo Ann Scattini who celebrated their anniversary last week.
