Dear Editor,

As a resident of San Benito County I would like to apologize to the California Valley Miwok Tribe for experiencing difficulties with project negotiations.

I am disappointed and concerns about the Board of Supervisors’ premature vote of opposition without receiving a full analysis of this project as agreed.

I understand you, as elected officials, must represent this county and determine what is in its best interest. But what I do not understand is your unfair position against this association. Your responsibility is to consider this project as you would any business proposal and conclude an unbiased decision. You have practiced unacceptable business ethics. As supervisors, you must not show prejudice when you’re faced with pressure to consider right or wrong. Please use integrity and leadership.

Everyday I read the newspaper or watch television news showing services and schools being impacted by the state cutbacks. I don’t want our community to become a statistic of those circumstances. We received a sample of those issues less than a year ago when city employees and services were being considered for cutbacks, and the city’s budget continues to be under strict review. Now we are pulling $600,000 out of our reserve accounts to cover a deficit for Hollister School District, which puts our school district in jeopardy of future cutbacks.

Unfortunately our state’s economic condition does not look promising in the near future. We, as a county and city need to accept this realty of financial uncertainty and move forward on what we can do long term. Though the vision of a casino was not part of the infrastructure, this project should be viewed as a positive step in bringing a considerable amount of revenue into the community.

What can we benefit from this business coming to our county and city?

And estimated 2000 jobs and millions of dollars in revenue that will continue to grow year after year, if negotiated correctly. This is a positive result whether you and I disagree on the morale basis of a casino. This business will enable us to financially prosper for many of our county and communities services and future growth of infrastructure such as the airport, hospitals, schools, libraries, public safety, youth centers, sewer and roads.

I ask that the supervisors reconsider their opposition. Review this project with business professionalism and not personal views.
