Darren Thompson is headed toward a sound victory in the race for county sheriff, according to unofficial results.

With all 55 precincts reporting, Thompson had gained 56.4 percent to 43.2 percent of votes for Pat Turturici, the undersheriff. Thompson had 6,612 votes, and Turturici had 5,056 votes, according to the figures.

The elections office still must count about 2,700 vote-by-mail ballots and another 450 to 500 provisional ballots, said Joe Paul Gonzalez, the county’s head elections official.

Gonzalez expects to have the provisional ballots counted by the end of the week, while he expects the remaining absentee ballots might take until Monday, he said.

Thompson, a Watsonville police lieutenant, is facing Turturici in the race to succeed Sheriff Curtis Hill.
