Darren Thompson has taken an initial lead over Pat Turturici in
the race for San Benito County sheriff, with 54.4 percent of the
vote to the undersheriff’s 45.1 percent after the elections office
released results from vote-by-mail ballots.

Thompson, a Watsonville police lieutenant, gained 3,668 votes after the first release of results on Election Day, with polls closing at 8 p.m. Turturici had gained 3,041 votes, according to unofficial results.
More than 14,000 of the county’s nearly 25,000 registered voters received a vote-by-mail ballot this year.
