The San Benito County Board of Supervisors will hold a special meeting Tuesday to discuss items related to the budget, at 1 p.m., in the Chambers, 481 Fourth St.

Supervisors will learn about the budget hearing process used in Monterey County and discuss the ways in which they would like to proceed with budget hearings for 2013-14. They will also discuss the budget timeline and calendar for the next fiscal year as well as other items related to the budget.

According to a tentative guideline provided as part of the agenda packet, department heads are expected to receive employee compensation projections from human resources and budget preparation templates from the county administrative officer on Feb. 1. The timeline, which will be reviewed by supervisors, includes deadlines for department heads to submit budget requests with time for the CAO and auditor to review the requests. The timeline includes a deadline of May 7 to present projected layoff notices to supervisors. The budget hearings are anticipated to be held starting on June 17.

Last year, layoff notices were delayed several times by supervisors, specifically those affecting the Sheriff’s Office and the District Attorney’s Office. The budget hearings also took place in July, after the start of the fiscal year.

Supervisors are also expected to hear about cost saving measures related to animal control and fire.
