Let the countdown begin! CMAP’s first Live Auction is happening live on Channel 20, Saturday and Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m.

You can bid over the phone or in person, depending on whether or not you have cable, because, as you know, CMAP is only available on Charter Cable.

Let me run over the ground rules with you so you’re ready to go on Saturday!

First of all, there’s preparation you can do before this weekend. All items for bid are available for viewing on our Web site, www.mycmap.org.

Write down when your favorite items are up for bid, and be sure to have your phone handy when those items appear on your television screen.

Then call our live studio line (846-4984) and put in your bid! Folks can also bid in-studio, so join us in the Gavilan College TV studio during auction hours for the full experience.

About 15 items an hour will be bid on, with a special list of bigger items being auctioned off Sunday night.

CMAP staff will be calling the winning bidders the week following the auction, so if you’re not sure if you’ve won, just wait for that call (or you can give us a jingle to confirm).

Folks can pick up their items at CMAP during the auction, or the week following. Paper items can be mailed as well.

Our staff has been debating what items are going to be the most popular. I was favoring the RV camping trip, but now that signed Sharks hockey puck is looking better and better!

At any rate, there’s something for everyone, so be sure to tune in.

We’re recruiting folks during the auction who are interested in being members of CMAP as well.

Membership allows you to take our production workshops, use our video equipment for free and get a copy of our quarterly newsletter.

We’ve got a couple of fun “membership incentives” that you’ll receive if you sign up this weekend, so don’t miss out.

A frequent question I’ve gotten is, “What is this money going toward, Suzanne?” Very valid question.

As you may or may not know, CMAP is a nonprofit community television organization. You’ll never see a commercial on our channels, and you’ll often see videos produced by students, seniors and those who would never have the opportunity to produce at a broadcast station.

We are all about supporting your right to free speech by providing equipment and an outlet for you to convey your message.

In addition, CMAP manages four channels for the cities of Gilroy, Hollister and San Juan Bautista that run 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Those channels are Cityview 17 Hollister/San Juan Bautista, GAV-TV Channel 18, Educational TV Channel 19 and Public Access Channel 20.

While we may not be the type of nonprofit that provides hot meals for the needy or offers social services for residents, we work with all of those agencies to help them get their message out, for free or at cost, by using the powerful tool of television.

We also produce programs featuring community representatives from all walks to life who have valuable information to share with residents about community activities. CMAP is your local television station, and we appreciate your supporting it!

So, be sure to catch all the action with hosts Tony Bruscia, Kirsten Carr, Craig Gartman, Pete Keesling, Theresa Kiernan and Julianne Palma this weekend!
