A 12-inch water main broke around 1:15 p.m., flooding water all over San Benito Street near the intersection of Vine Street and prompting part of the road to be closed.
The break was big enough to fill gutters halfway up the side of the road about a block from the break and send water north all the way until Haydon Street, where it was draining into the sewer on the east side of the road.
Palmtag Drive and Vine Street were both blocked off near San Benito Street as of 1:45 p.m. Direction signals were placed at Nash Road and Palm Street, directing drivers away from that source. Along with public works officials, firemen were on the scene helping to direct traffic.
Dave Sanchez, who lives on the 1200 block of San Benito Street, was making a dam out of soil in the driveway at 1:30 p.m. to prevent more water from getting into the back of the house and the cottage, also located in the back.
“It was a nasty flood,” Sanchez said.
It is unclear how much damage the flooding may have caused.
Although he couldn’t say exactly what time the break happened, he said he thought it was around 1:15 p.m. Sanchez’s nephew Frank Sanchez was helping with the effort and said around six inches of water had flooded into the cottage where he lives.
Sanchez said this was the second time it has happened in the past two months. The last break was near the corner of Richardson Drive, a half block from his residence.
