I am starting to see roadside posters reading NO ON G, and I’m reminded that I will be voting on this measure in a short time. This subject sends me back to my eighth grade teacher – Mr. Fields.

On the first day of class, he walked in, and even before taking role, he pointed his finger at us, and in a loud voice said, “You need three things to live: food, clothing and shelter.”

So I formally learned the requirements of life on the first day of my eighth grade class. In my learned opinion, any subject dealing with housing is a very important subject. Important to me and you, important to those young impressionable faces looking up at their eighth grade teachers today, and yes, by establishing precedent, important to their children. I pray that we have the wisdom not to allow petty aesthetic prejudices to guide our decisions for something as far reaching as this measure. Today’s eighth grade children will need room to grow and they will need as many options with which to grow as we can pass on to them.

Roadblocks and restrictions dealing with something as important as housing is not an inheritance that I would be proud to pass on. We are an open and prosperous society. As a consequence, we have a growing population. We should spend our energies learning how to accommodate that growth, but there is something else growing at an alarming rate that we should not accommodate. That is the difference between those who have and those who have not. I don’t think G helps this situation at all. I think it adds to it – significantly.

Vote NO on Measure G.
