Editor,

If you only needed a half-gallon of milk, would you go to Costco, or to the neighborhood grocery store? Likewise, if you needed an appendectomy, would you trek to Stanford, or go to the local community hospital?

The Browders are misguided in their belief that Hazel Hawkins is trying to compete with Stanford. As a registered nurse at HHH, I can see the need for modernizing as a Level 1 facility. Stanford is a Level 3 facility, in addition to being a research and teaching hospital. Each hospital is licensed by the state to dispense medical care within the confines of the license.

I seriously doubt that Stanford wants Hollister residents flooding their already busy hospital for primary care needs that can be met at the local hospital given the proper resources.

Yes, it will cost money. Everything costs money. How much do you pay for a movie for two? Would you not pay this much each month to assure adequate emergency care is available to you?

We’re not talking about building a cardiac cath lab here at HHH, like they have in Salinas. Our job here is to diagnose, stabilize and evaluate for transport, if necessary. It can be a long ride to Salinas if you are having a heart attack! By the way, an ambulance ride is not like a limousine. You don’t designate where you want to go. They will take you to the nearest hospital within the county. Wouldn’t you like to know that the ER that is your destination is equipped to receive you in a timely manner?

How can we hope to attract new physicians if we don’t have a modern hospital in which they can admit?

Yes on Measure L.
