Members of the San Benito County 4-H program attended “Pump It Up,” a seminar April 13 designed to enhance their leadership capabilities.

The event at Spring Grove School was hosted by Ty Doty as his All Star Applicant project. Doty taught members how to include all ideas at meetings by using a voting method designed to make all participants feel included in the decision-making process. Doty also taught members ice-breaking games to use in their clubs and projects, in cluding “Thumper,” a hand-slapping memory game.

After members gave impromptu presentations on topics of choice, Doty taught them the “11 W’s” of plannign an event, including using an “oversized time line,” and explained the Gemini Model to encourage well-thought-out event planning.

“In all of my 4-H leadership training, I had never encountered this particular method of teaching leadership skills until becoming involved in leadership at the high school level,” Doty said. He credited Juan Robledo, director of student services at San Benito High School, as well as the CASC leadership camps he has attended for three years and received training to be a counselor.

“I know this type of training will help these 4-Hers with their leadership skills,” Doty said. “I hope I have made a difference for them.”
