What’s that old saying, April showers bring May flowers? Well, it sure is happening in South County. We were blessed with almost two inches of rain last week. Mother Nature sure works in mysterious ways, just when you think you’re not going to get another drop of rain for the year, she gives you buckets of rain to keep the grass a growing. Whew, what a relief!
John and Susan Nino branded another set of calves last Thursday at the Pellegrini Ranch. And yes, that was the day it was pouring down rain! It wasn’t very cold but it was very wet. Some of those helping out included John Flook, JW Brewen, Danny Cardoza, Lee Whitney, Vern Scattini, Jay Jones and me, Todd and Brody.
Another round of baby congratulations go out to another South County family. Little Elsa Ray Sabin finally arrived last week, much to the relief of her proud parents, Casey and Krista Sabin, and her grandparents, Kenny and Vicki Sabin. She was a little peanut, weighing in at 6 lbs., 8 oz. She arrived happy and healthy on April 12. Congratulations, Sabin family. We’re all eager to meet you!
The Salinas Rodeo grounds were a muddy mess last weekend as district 4 hosted the annual multi-district high school rodeo there. Thanks to the hard-working parents and kids of district 4, they were able to pull off the event despite the ground conditions. Believe it or not, the entire rodeo took place on the track, team roping included! The team roping was like watching a mini NFR at the Thomas and Mack, interesting but it was good! The roughstock events were completely postponed on Saturday as there was no way they could buck stock in the arena or on the track. Thankfully, after hours and hours of ground work, a little breeze and lots of sunshine on Sunday, they were able to run the roughstock events only in the arena.
Congratulations to Hollister’s Tommy Ford for winning the Bareback Riding title for the weekend. Tommy is in his second year of bareback riding and he is getting better and better each trip. Way to go, Tommy. We’re all very proud of you! Gilroy’s Dane Lybbert-Browning, also a district 4 member, had a great weekend as he won both the Steer Wrestling and Calf Roping titles. Taylor Vollin of Salinas was the junior high division All-Around Cowgirl Champion. Way to go, D4. You all did a fantastic job! The final D4 rodeo of the year before State Finals will be held on May 5 at the Posse Grounds in Salinas.
