Free-agent, all-pro quarterback Jeff Garcia confirmed reports Tuesday night that his agent has been in contact with the Philadelphia Eagles, and mentioned that there is interest but no contract offer as of yet.
A report by the Philadelphia Daily News of Garcia’s possible return to the Eagles surfaced last week after the Eagles departed with long-time starting quarterback Donovan McNabb, who was dealt to the Washington Redskins on April 4.
The consensus among bloggers and other media outlets is that nothing is imminent between the two parties, and if anything does happen, it wouldn’t be until after the Eagles decide what to do with Michael Vick.
Garcia wrote in an e-mail to the Associated Press on Wednesday that he would be open to a back-up role to third-year quarterback Kevin Kolb, who the Eagles announced as their starting quarterback last week.
This seems like the perfect fit for Garcia, who has a familiarity with the Eagles’ West-Coast offense and a solid relationship with the fans in Philly — not an easy thing to pull off. Garcia has also mentioned many times in recent months that he is willing to do whatever it takes to help a team win.
Garcia would serve Kolb well as a mentor, but also help the Eagles’ talented corps of receivers to learn from a guy who understands route running and the intricacies of playing quarterback.
He has been successful there, too. Garcia, an 11-year vet, served as McNabb’s back-up during the 2006-07 season, taking over for the injured starter in November of that year. He led the Eagles to an NFC East title and a first-round playoff victory, throwing 10 touchdowns to just two interceptions during a five-game winning streak to close out the regular season.
“Of all the places, I’d love to see him go to the Eagles,” Garcia’s dad and Hall of Fame coach Bobby Garcia said. “They have the talent to go all the way, and if he can be a part of that, that would be great.”
However it plays out, though, Garcia appears to be headed for another season, and he deserves it.
