New Hollister School District Superintendent Gary McIntire hasn’t been in Hollister for long, actually only two weeks, but he is quickly seeing all the benefits in the city and county.

“I have not met a person that has not impressed me,” McIntire said. “I’ve been impressed with my staff and their commitment to this city.”

In only his second day on the job he quickly has gotten a handle on it, but he knows there is a lot of work to do with budget restrictions and the loss of school attendance.

McIntire, 55, was hired at the end of May to succeed the retired Ron Crates. His first day was last Thursday and he was promptly put into meetings about what needs to be done with the budget. The district, like most districts throughout the county, is having serious budgets problem.

To fix them, McIntire has two goals that he is ready to set into place. First, the district needs to be able to pay its bills and stay within the budget.

“It’s a priority and it has to be that way,” he said.

And second, the district needs to focus on achieving each school maximum potential.

Citing that two schools within the district recently scored over 800 in the API testing, above the state’s average, McIntire hopes that every school will soon do the same.

“I believe all our schools will get there soon,” he said. “Students will get the best education they could get.”
