Who runs the site: Johnny and Shannon, who describe themselves on the site as two poor, underemployed San Franciscans, initially got the idea in 2003. That was when they started a yahoo group where people could post listings of fun cheap things to do in the greater Bay Area.
Who is likely to use the site: People who want to spend some time in the city, but who don’t have a lot of extra cash to spend on activities.
Pros: The site has listings for the greater Bay Area, from San Jose to San Francisco, and East to Berkeley, and the great thing about it is that all the listings are in one location so users don’t have to browse through a myriad of city Web sites or newspapers to find out what is going on.
The best thing about the site, though, is that it is user driven so there is potential to have a lot more listings in the future as more people get involved. The postings usually include a time, date, location and a decent description of the events. The events range from art openings to free band performances, to cultural events such as the Vietnamese New Year Tet Festival. It also lists some recurring events, such as the free admission at Golden Gate Park museums on the third Wednesday of every month.
Users can also sign up for a newsletter that gets the weekly listings sent automatically to e-mail addresses.
Cons: The listings seem to be posted no more than a week in advance, so this site is best for those who like to fly by the seat of their pants, and not those who like to make their plans months ahead of time.
And as a free site, there are ads on the page, so beware that some of the sponsored links are probably not going to take users to free activities.
