I’m sure all of you have heard the term “death grip.” Well, having a death grip on a golf club is really the truth because it will kill your distance.
The tighter your hands are on the club, the less flexible your muscles and tendons become because they are in a rigid state. In this state, you won’t get the same snap into the hitting area as you would if your hands were loose.
A good analogy might be throwing a baseball. A baseball should lay gently in your hand with light grip pressure, just enough so you don’t loose control of it. This allows the ball to roll off of your fingertips. Grip it tight and you’ll probably throw the ball directly into the ground. It’s the same with a golf club.
Light grip pressure allows your wrists and forearms to be looser, and can then increase the clubhead speed. Increase the speed and you increase the distance.
So, the next time you are out playing, check your grip pressure. A good thing to keep in mind is to grip the club as tight as you would an egg without breaking it. Give yourself that test and watch your drives fly farther.
