California’s newest state park opened its gates last week in Monterey County.
The 979-acre Fort Ord Dunes State Park includes four miles of Monterey Bay shoreline and dunes between Sand City and Marina.
The former Army land officially became state property on Feb. 24, although the park has been in the planning stages for more than a decade.
When Fort Ord Dunes opened March 3, visitors for the first time had access to a refurbished parking lot and 1,500-foot walking trail to the beach. A surfer was waiting to be the first to enjoy the new park when the gates opened at 8 a.m.
Park officials plan to hold an opening ceremony, tentatively scheduled for April 15.
