Gavilan Kennel Club hosts annual show in San Benito
The Gavilan Kennel Club held its annual dog show at Bolado Park last weekend, and it brought out hundreds of breeders and dog owners from throughout the state to show their animals.
The gathering attracts a variety of experience in breeding and showing. One of the participants was Hollister’s Jose Martinez, who has become one of the more reputable breeders in the country.
He has been breeding and training dogs for nearly 30 years, has won top honors among breeders in the nation and has been invited to the prestigious American Kennel Club Eukanuba National Championship “a handful of times.”
Currently, he is showing four dogs he either owns or sold to someone else.
“You want to come out and prove every year you have better stock than anybody else,” said Martinez, noting he spends about four hours a day – after his full-time job – working with the dogs, feeding them and cleaning. “Our rush is to go out here and prove we have better temperament, better confirmation dogs.”
The show also brought out first-timers such as Johnny Subia of Gilroy, who showed a yellow lab bred by his girlfriend. He said he had spent the past three weeks before the show preparing.
As for his feelings heading in, he said, “I’m glad it’s a smaller show.”
