Wooden crossing on Hillcrest needs a fixing
If you ever cross McCray Street at South Street/Hillcrest Road – still a busy intersection despite diverted traffic from the bypass – you’re sure to take a momentary and raggedy trip back in time while heading over a wooden railroad crossing on the A&W side of the road.
Unpleasant railroad crossings are nothing new and often take years before getting repaired, but even city engineering official David Rubcic pointed out how that particular intersection garners a fair share of complaints and that it’s worn enough to necessitate fixing.
The problem, however, is that it’s up to Union Pacific to authorize and fund the work because the company owns that and other similar crossings throughout Hollister. Rubcic pointed out how the city often passes on complaints and suggestions about crossings in need of repair and how the South Street intersection has come up before with U.P. representatives.
“We would like to get them replaced,” Rubcic said. “Sometimes it’s really difficult to deal with them (U.P.).”
Company spokeswoman Raquel Espinosa, meanwhile, noted how U.P. is continually examining which areas might need repair. She said such projects are handled case by case when they arise. Regarding the South Street crossing, she said she would check whether U.P. has plans to repair it but she did not get back to the Pinnacle before press time.
