The San Juan Bautista Historical Society is inviting residents to join the group at Dona Esther’s on June 13 when Aromas resident Alan Kemp will speak about the influence of water on the development of the Spanish El Camino Real (also known locally as the Anza Trail) in old Monterey-San Benito County and the selection of Mission San Juan Bautista’s site. Tremors soccer registration
The Hollister Tremors Youth Soccer Club Fall Recreational Soccer Season registration is now open and closes 10 p.m. June 20. Register online at hollistertremors.org. The league stresses player development and soccer enjoyment. Players are assigned to teams in which each player must play at least 50 percent of each game throughout the season. Registration is open to both boys and girls born between August 1, 2001 and July 31, 2012. There are separate boys and girls teams divided into age groups from U6 through U14 in even numbered years. Club representatives will be available to assist with online registration June 15, 6 p.m.- 8:30 p.m., at Mars Hill Coffeehouse, 610 San Benito St., Hollister. VFW golf tournament
Golf registration forms are now available for the third annual VFW Golf Tournament. The tournament will take place on June 19 with sign-in at 9:30 a.m. and a shotgun start at 11:00 a.m. at San Juan Oaks Golf Club. Entry fee is $125 per person, which includes tee prizes, golf cart and dinner. Non-golfers are also welcome for dinner. Dinner tickets are $35 per person. No-host cocktails are at 5:30 p.m. and dinner begins at 6:30 p.m. A silent auction and raffle will also take be held. Saddle Horse Show & Rodeo
The San Benito County Saddle Horse Show & Rodeo is around the corner, and so is the annual parade that precedes it. Organizers with the San Benito County Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau are looking for entries into the Saddle Horse Show Parade set for 6 p.m. June 25 along San Benito Street in downtown Hollister. Advocate training
Community Solutions’ Volunteer Advocate Training for Sexual Assault, Intimate Partner Abuse and Human Trafficking Volunteers is set for June 26– July 31 on these days: Fridays 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m. and Saturdays 8 a.m.–5 p.m. (excluding July 4th weekend). This nine-day training provides community members with the skills and knowledge to become a Certified Sexual Assault and Intimate Partner Abuse Advocate. Trained advocates will be able to provide prevention, education and outreach presentations; assist with legal advocacy and court accompaniment; provide peer support to survivors at our confidential shelter and crisis line support; provide in person responses for survivors in crisis; and support at our Morgan Hill and Hollister offices. Library Auxiliary discovery camps
The San Benito County Free Library Auxiliary will host a two-week Summer Discovery Camp for children ages 8–12 years in June and July. The camp is funded in part by a Community Impact Grant from the Community Foundation for San Benito County. This year the auxiliary is introducing two Camp Discovery Workshops: June 22-26 and June 29-July 3 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at the Luck Library. The Auxiliary’s goal is to bring children of diverse ages, abilities, backgrounds and interests together to engage in hands-on learning experiences. The first camp will focus on local Native American Tribal Culture (Ohlone). The second camp will offer an Inventor Workshop with LEGO Construction Kits and will also involve the building of catapults and simple machines with wood. July 4 block parties
Anyone wishing to close a street in the City of Hollister (a public right of way) for a block party at any time, but especially for 4th of July celebrations, must have permission from the City of Hollister. Applications are available in the City Clerk’s Office, City Hall, 375 Fifth St., Hollister, or by calling the City Clerk’s Office at (831) 636-4300, x 16 or 17. Applicants must submit a completed application for a block party as well as an executed hold harmless agreement, both of which are available from the City Clerk’s Office, as well as a certificate of insurance naming the City of Hollister as an additional insured. Certificates of insurance are usually available from a resident’s home owners insurance company. Normally a request is required to be submitted 30 days prior to an event. However, due to increased requests for 4th of July permits and scheduled City Council meetings, all completed applications for this 4th of July must be submitted to the City Clerk’s Office no later than Thursday, June 4, 2015, at 5 p.m. For more, call Christine Black at (831) 636-4300, ext. 16.
Kiddie Parade
The Annual Kiddie Parade will be held on July 4th beginning at 10 a.m. The Kiddie Parade will begin in the commuter parking lot at Veterans Memorial Park on Memorial Drive and continue north on Memorial Drive to Marguerite Maze Middle School. Children of all ages are welcome to participate: walk, ride, roller skate, roller blade, etc. All entrants will receive an American flag donated by ACE Hardware. A short program will be held at Marguerite Maze Middle School following the Kiddie Parade; then the kids receive cookies, donated by the local McDonald’s restaurants, and punch donated by the 4th of July Celebration Committee. The Kiddie Parade is presented by the 4th of July Celebration Committee of the Hollister Downtown Association. No dogs or motorized vehicles are permitted. Fireworks display
The annual community fireworks display will take place on July 4 (Saturday) at 9:30 p.m. in the field adjacent to Marguerite Maze Middle School. The fireworks are a gift to the public from the 4th of July Celebration Committee and the 12 local non-profit groups that sell safe and sane fireworks at their fireworks booths.
Motorcycle raffle for veterans
The American Legion Post 69 and Veterans of Foreign Wars locally are raffling off a 2015 Indian Motorcycle Chief Classic with a custom patriotic paint job. Tickets are $20 each or six for $100 while just 5,000 will be sold. Proceeds go to charities. The drawing is set for 2 p.m. July 5. For more, go to americanlegionpost69.org.

Freitas Memorial Golf Tournament
The 2015 Kelly Freitas Memorial Golf Tournament at San Juan Oaks is set for July 10. This event is in memory of San Juan Oaks Director of Golf Manny Freitas’ wife Kelly who passed away in 2010 from breast cancer. Proceeds from the event go directly to the Kelly Freitas Memorial Scholarship Fund. The golf tournament begins with a noon shotgun start that includes music throughout the day, unique on-course games including the “High Heel Hole”, the “Fastest Hole” & “the “Blind Fold Hole”. The dinner party begins at 5 p.m. with a no-host cocktail hour, silent auction, raffle, games and live entertainment. Dinner party tickets are $45 each and are available at San Juan Oaks beginning April 1. This event will fill up very quickly so be sure to sign up and get your tickets ASAP.
