California residents have a new method for filing their 2008 state tax return. Nearly 1 million people will be able to use ReadyReturn, a program that provides taxpayers with a completed tax return and requires no additional information or paperwork.

“ReadyReturn makes filing taxes as easy as it gets,” said John Chiang, the state controller and the franchise tax board chair. “The state does the work for the taxpayers by using information it already has to simply generate the tax return. Taxpayers have complete control to file the return, change it or use any other filing method.”

The option is available for single taxpayers who earn wages from only one employer, take the standard deduction and have no dependents. They can opt for the filing method by visiting www.ftb.ca.gov or calling 1-800-338-0505.

Another method for electronic filing is CalFile, which always people who file 540 2EZ, 540A and some who file 540 to send in their return electronically.

“The FTB has expanded customer service and created options to make tax filing easier for California taxpayers,” Chiang said.

In addition to the tech changes, there have been some changes to the law. For the 2007 tax year, registered domestic partners are required to file their state tax returns using either the married filing jointly or married filing separately status.

The standard deductions for single or married filing separately have increased from $3,410 to $3,516. For joint, surviving spouses, or head of household filers, the deduction has increased from $6,820 to $7,032.

The personal exemption amount for single, married filing separately or head of household filers went from $91 to 94. For joint or surviving spouse, it went to $188 from $182. The dependent exemption credit has increased to $294 per dependent claimed.
