School uniforms a ludicrous idea
Lately, the effect of being a college student has been hitting
me. With all the homework, plus the rapid growth of my music and
singing career, I have been keeping very busy. Unfortunately, I
didn’t realize how busy I really was. I had to learn a shocking,
dramatic change to my Alma Mater through a MySpace bulletin.
School uniforms a ludicrous idea
Lately, the effect of being a college student has been hitting me. With all the homework, plus the rapid growth of my music and singing career, I have been keeping very busy. Unfortunately, I didn’t realize how busy I really was. I had to learn a shocking, dramatic change to my Alma Mater through a MySpace bulletin.
A friend of mine, who is a senior at the high school now, was venting on how the new dress code was ridiculous. When I asked her what was up, I was appalled by what she said, and I too feel that this new policy is ridiculous. Out of the blue, the administration decided to ban certain colored belts and certain brand names due to what they are only saying are “gang related activity.” I just have one question; will someone tell me what is going on?
The rumors I hear are not pretty. Is the administration hiding something? Students are confused as to why they have to go out of their way and buy new clothes to accommodate a random dress code revision. Not all students can afford to do this. Unfortunately, it is hitting my little brother, who is an eighth grader. I know many of the students are trying to stop it. It brings me back to when the art programs were being threatened last year. I remember fighting in front of the school board (or what few board members were actually paying attention) for the school to keep the choir program, as well as other programs being threatened. First you take away our arts programs, now you’re practically taking the students right to wear clothes! Every day a new color is becoming gang related. What happens when we’re all out of colors? Do we attend school naked? Of course not, that’s illegal! And waving an American flag is now against school policy? Is any of this legal, or should I say, moral?
A recent poll shows that 61 percent of people want a uniform policy for our schools. This is only going to cause more hate. I can assure you I anticipate lower test scores and a decrease in attendance throughout the year. That’s always been the big issue as well. We must keep our scores up.
Are our students safe at San Benito High school? Is this why there is this random ban of colors and symbols and brand names? Couldn’t it just be coincidence that someone who has been proved a gang member was wearing a Nor-Cal shirt when he was out doing whatever it is that’s “unsafe?” I can’t even remember the last time a fight was on campus due to gangs. What is happening to our high school? What’s happening to our town? I think it’s time for someone to talk.
