After Vincent Cardinalli, Sr. fired his defense attorney and took up the task of defending himself against scores of felony counts stemming from a tow and sue scam, both the prosecution and defense are waiting as he slogs through more than 20,000 pages of evidence.

At a Dec. 3 hearing, attorneys gathered to set a date for Cardinalli and his family’s preliminary hearing. Deputy District Attorney Dale Lohman received a motion from Cardinalli requesting a gag order just days before the hearing, she said. The motion was denied, however.

“I’m seeking to keep the case moving forward to get justice for the victims,” Lohman said.

Lohman said there is no time limit for how long Cardinalli can take to prepare himself.

Attorneys will meet Jan. 14 to set a date for a preliminary hearing, a process that could take up to six weeks. The task of organizing court staff and four attorneys’ schedules, along with sifting through mounds of evidence has postponed the case for months.

Cardinalli, 65, his son Paul Greer, 31 – formerly Vincent Cardinalli Jr. – Greer’s sister Rosemary Ball and her husband Michael Ball face 169 counts of conspiracy, perjury, forgery, attempted grand theft and other felony charges stemming from hundreds of lawsuits filed by Cardinalli and Greer in hopes of collecting towing and storage fees for their defunct towing businesses.

Cardinalli and Greer were originally arrested in June 2007 following an eight-month investigation.
