San Juan Bautista – The City Council approved a new formula business ordinance at its meeting on Tuesday.

The ordinance bans most stores that conform to a larger chain’s appearance or business practices. However, it makes an exception for businesses that address a community need that isn’t being served by existing stores.

The council passed an ordinance banning all formula businesses without exception in 2004. City Manager Jan McClintock said the ordinance was accidentally left out when the city code was revised last year.

When the council was considering the ordinance, many Mission City residents said they believe a chain store like McDonald’s or Starbucks would ruin the town’s charm. But McClintock said neither store would pass muster under the new ordinance.
