Where’s Our Pennant?
CALLER 1: Hello, I am a parent of a varsity baseball player. The team won the MBLs last year or whatever the league is called. I was just wondering what we have to do to get the sign. Is it the parents’ responsibility or the school’s responsibility? Could you help me out in finding the answer.
GREEN PHONE: We believe you’re referring to the championship banner to hang on the outfield fence to honor the 2006 Tri-County Athletic League champion San Benito baseball team alongside the signs recognizing past Haybaler teams who have won league title. Assuming that, the Green Phone spoke with San Benito baseball coach Michael Luna about the sign. He said it’s the baseball program’s responsibility to get the sign done and it is in the process of doing so. Luna said it should have been done a while ago, but the people who are getting it made have been a little tardy in doing so. But worry not, the sign will eventually be in place to recognize the accomplishments of the ‘Balers, who won a school record 24 games en route to the TCAL title.
CALLER 2: Read your March 24 article (on the Kelsey Jeffries-Rhonda Luna fight). You let Kelsey know for us that the bump on Rhonda’s head had nothing to do with any of the punches she threw. The only thing Kelsey threw in that fight that made any mark on my fighter was her own head. If
“experience” involves running and holding, then she’s right, she was the more “experienced.” You make sure she knows that.
GREEN PHONE: That message was sent to us by Jacob Luna, the brother and manager of Rhonda Luna, who Kelsey beat by split decision to retain her International Female Boxers Association featherweight title. Yes, there was an unintentional knocking of the heads by both fighters early in the bout that contributed to the bump on Luna’s head. Regardless, with nearly 50 fights to her professional name, Jeffries has gained an experience or two and it showed. She strengthened in the later rounds and that helped her to victory. Luna clearly is a talented boxer, but in this fight, Kelsey showed why she’s the world champ.
