Hollister – In a very similar set of circumstances to the first matchup this season, the San Benito girls tennis team was able to pull off a 6-1 victory over Gilroy on Thursday.

The two teams met Sept. 18 with the matches going in favor of the Lady ‘Balers 5-2.

San Benito swept all of the singles matches and the top two doubles pairings, dropping only the No. 3 doubles game.

No. 4 singles player Abby Woods won the closest match of the day, edging Gories Kwong in a tiebreaker 10-7 after splitting sets 6-1, 2-6.

Kaitlyn O’Keefe, the Lady ‘Balers No. 3 singles player, had an equally close contest but was also able to defeat her opponenet, winning 6-4, 7-5 over Emily Castro.

“It was a pretty close match,” San benito coach Ed Cecena said. “That one could have gone either way. Kaitlyn put enough pressure on her opponent to create some errors.”

The coach said his team – still undefeated at 12-0 overall, 8-0 in the Tri-County Athletic League – has continued to play better with each new match.

“Every match,” Cecena said. “I’m really impressed with the way the girls are getting better. It’s what a coach likes to see, improvement.”

He also gave credit to a Mustang squad that has shown dramatic improvement under first-year coach Jami Reynolds.

“Gilroy has improved a lot too,” Cecea said. “I made that comment to several people. Gilroy managed to hang in there and push some of my players and challenge them.”

Sen Benito’s next match will be played Tuesday at home against North Salinas.
