Democratic Assemblyman cites family in decision to leave Sacramento
Assemblyman Simon Salinas, D-Salinas, is bowing out of a bid for the California Senate, and instead will focus his family and a run at a Monterey County Board of Supervisors seat.
Salinas had considered a Senate run with the 12th District, but was afraid that too much of his time would have to be spent out of the area. Instead, he has pulled papers for the Third Supervisoral District in Monterey County.
According to Salinas’ press secretary Frank Molina, the decision mostly had to do with Salinas’ elderly father, 96. It was also noted that the Assemblyman would like to spend more time with his son, a sophomore at Salinas High School.
Assemblyman Salinas said that obviously working on local issues in Sacramento has been very rewarding. With his involvement in the League of Cities, he has tried to stay local and support local government.
“I certainly wish there had not been so many crisis situations, first it was energy, then budget and now term limits. With all that you have to get up to speed fast, you have to rise to the challenge quickly,”Salinas said
With two-thirds of Salinas’ Senate district in the Central Valley, he’d be required to travel there often. With his father in hospice care and his son playing high school football, Salinas wants to finish out this term and then spend a few years locally. When he decided not to run for the Senate Salinas looked around and saw that the Supervisoral District was up for election in June, since he wanted to remain active in politics he decided to run.
Salinas believes that all politics should be local, that’s how he has approached his time with the Assembly and how he said he would approach the board of supervisors. “Having seen how Sacramento works, I can bring that knowledge to Monterey County. To the voters of District 3. We have a county hospital and I’ve been working for public safety, I think the position could be very rewarding, contributing at the local level again.” Salinas said.
