For those of us who have large areas of standing water that
cannot be drained, an easy way to stop mosquitoes from developing
is to sprinkle kitchen or mineral oil on the water. Even a light
oil film on the water suffocates the developing mosquito
larvae.

Of course, motor oils or other toxic oils should never be used.
