Hollister – The Rancho San Justo/ Marguerite Maze middle schools’ band and color guard are holding a craft fair Saturday to raise funds and promote the program as members prepare to compete in the San Jose Christmas Parade on Sunday.
“We got a little tired of selling candy bars,” said color guard instructor Jen Ostenson-Coffey.
The craft fair will be held in the Rancho gym from 10am to 4pm, with the band and color guard performing until 1:30pm. Over 40 vendors will be peddling everything from quilts to vitamins, crafts to beauty products.
“It’s definitely the crafts fair to be at,” said Ostenson-Coffey.
The band’s boosters club used parent contacts to find interested vendors.
“Everybody seemed to have a friend with something to sell, and their friends all wanted booth space, too,” said Ostenson-Coffey.
Vendors paid a flat fee for booth space – raising $1,700.
“It costs a lot of money to take these trips to band competitions,” she said.
The expense seems to pay off, however. The schools’ bands and color guards have both held impressive competition records over the years, and are returning to the San Jose Christmas Parade as champions. They won first place last year.
“They hold a battle of the bands,” said Ostenson-Coffey. “And the kids really go for it.”
