Officials at San Benito High School are urging parents of students who will enter the school in August to attend the Eighth Grade Preview Night Thursday.
The event is geared toward parents so they can learn what the high school offers, said Duane Morgan, vice principal of student services.
“It’s to get parents aware of what we’re doing,” he said.
The event will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. with booths and informative presentations all over the SBHS campus. Spanish-speaking parents can attend a presentation about the school at 6 p.m. in room 344. Also at 6 p.m., parents of special education students can learn about their children’s Individualized Education Plan in room 360.
At 6:30 p.m., the main activities start in the Mattson Gym, on the south side of Nash Road at Monterey Street. The Navy Junior ROTC will present the colors and the SBHS band will perform the national anthem, followed by presentations by cheerleaders, the dance team and the choir, Morgan said.
All night, all departments on campus will have booths in the O’Donnell Gym, across Nash Road from Mattson Gym, to answer questions and provide information about each department.
“We want to get kids and parents motivated to take classes,” Morgan said.
In the auditorium, counselors Mary Conklin and Linda Yetter will go over graduation requirements so parents know what is expected of students. The science and math departments will team in the cafeteria and the history and English departments will be in the library to acquaint parents with the programs they offer.
A lot of the preview night is about letting parents know what is expected of students, Morgan said.
“(It illustrates) the importance of taking school seriously right from the get-go,” he said. “A lot of freshmen get here and they’re shocked. If the parents buy in, the students will buy in.”
