Hazel Hawkins Nursing Administration has teamed with the Hazel Hawkins Hospital Foundation to come up with a plan that would help the hospital recruit and maintain nursing staff.

Last year the foundation received 23 applications and awarded $10,000 for a total of 13 scholarships. Two went to pre-med students and a one to a surgery technician student, and the rest to the nursing program.

“This year our focus is nursing,” said foundation director Leah Dowty.

Hazel Hawkins has 16 nursing positions to fill. Director of Nursing Lineally Stinger said, “There is a nationwide nursing shortage that affects Hazel Hawkins just as it does all hospitals throughout the country.”

The foundation is offering $10,000 in scholarships for students looking for a career in medicine. “We hope this will encourage them to go into the medical field,” Dowty said.

Applications for 2003 are available in the lobby at the hospital, 901 Sunset Drive. Applications are also available through Anzar, San Andreas and San Benito high schools. Deadline to apply is April 30 and recipients will be selected in May. Applicants must be high school graduates and residents of San Benito County for at least one year prior to the application date.

For more information, call the foundation at 636-2653.
