spruce up the downtown area Saturday in the annual Spring
Cleanup.

Anyone who wants to help tidy up the downtown corridor can meet HDA members and other volunteers at 9 a.m. on the grass next to the Briggs Building at the corner of Fourth and San Benito streets.
“We’re going to plant flowers, pull weeds, sweep out the alleys, pick up garbage and, if weather permits, we’ll pressure-wash and clean the windows,” said project coordinator Diana Thorson.
Officials say the annual event has become an activity for residents who want to show they care about the community they live in. Thorson said it doesn’t take a lot to join in – just some elbow grease and a willingness to help.
“We just ask that you bring your own gloves, a broom if you have one, a shovel or any type of tool that can help us,” Thorson said.
Volunteers are not asked to do any heavy work or remodeling of buildings, just to give downtown a little cleansing.
“We just want to clean it up,” Thorson said. “We want to pick out the flowers that don’t look very good and spruce up the downtown and make it look more appealing.”
Several non-profit groups have already pledged to join the effort.
“We have Girl Scout troops, Boy Scout troops, members of 4-H, the Youth Alliance, LULAC members and several families who wanted to help,” Thorson said. “This is going to be done rain or shine, unless it’s a really heavy rain.”
The forecast is for partly sunny skies Saturday with temperatures near 70.
As a reward for their efforts, volunteers will be treated to a smorgasbord of refreshments provided by grateful downtown businesses.
“We’ll have some goodies there for everybody,” Thorson said. “Food has been donated by Faultline Bagels, Elegant Touch, the Mainstreet Bistro, McDonald’s, Jessie’s Donuts and She’s.”
