Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Training for those who want to
be volunteers or advocates for survivors of abuse. The 60-hour
state-certified training runs from Aug. 12 to Sept. 18, Tuesday and
Thursday evenings and every other Saturday. Participants receive
state certification as a domestic violence and sexual assault
advocate and basic orientation to Community Solutions and its
services. The class is open to Santa Clara and San Benito county

Street Festival coming: The 17th Annual Hollister Street Festival will be held Saturday, Aug. 16 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. With more than 10,000 people expected, the event will feature a petting zoo, a classic car show, kiddie carnival, live entertainment, new car alley, and over 60 food, craft, information and sales booths. Volunteers needed: The 17th annual Street Festival will be held in downtown Hollister on Saturday, Aug. 16 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Volunteers are needed and there is still space available in the classic car show. Call the Hollister Downtown Association to volunteer or to enter the show at 636-8406.

Summer reading program: The Friends of the San Benito County Free Library will sponsor a free summer reading program, “Reading is a Picnic,” for young adults and children 6 and over Thursdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. through Aug. 7 at the library, 470 Fifth St.

Mary Lee Sunseri will perform Marylee’s Musical Library Show for children during Awards Night Aug. 7.

Participants must have a library card and read books checked out from the library. Library cards will be available when registering or any time before. For more information, call 636-4107.

Family vacation Bible school: Hollister United Methodist Church is offering a family vacation bible school Aug. 3-7 from 5-7:30 p.m. Dinner will be served every evening. Activities include Bible stories, music, crafts and daily visits from farm animals. Cost is $15 per person. Call 637-4240 to reserve a space.

Presentations on groundwater: The public is invited to two informational presentations on groundwater. The Groundwater Management Plan Update for the San Benito County portion of the Gilroy-Hollister Groundwater Basin and the Programmatic Environmental Impact Report on that plan update will be presented.

A presentation will also be made on a Study of Groundwater and Geology in the vicinity of the HOllister Domestic Wastewater Treatment Plant and the Hollister Industrial Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The Water Resources Association meeting will be Hollister City Council Chambers on Thursday, Aug. 7 at 7:30 p.m.

2003-04 Grand Jury: People interested in being members on the 2003-04 San Benito County Grand Jury should attend an orientation meeting on Thursday, Aug. 7, at 7 p.m. at the home of foreperson Roxy Montana at 7350 Pacheco Pass in Hollister (across from Old Sugar Plum/Plum Tree Restaurant on Highway 156). 4-H looking for members: Union 4-H in San Benito County is looking for new members. The club meets the second Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. Members are involved in sheep, clothing, arts and crafts, food and various community projects. CARES: The CARES Project, created by Ombudsman/Advocate, will meet on Wednesday, Aug. 13, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Hollister Community Center at 300 West St. The meeting is free and open to the public. The CARES Project was created to address the needs and concerns of family and friend caregivers of facility-placed seniors. Details: 429-1913 or 636-1638.

Cuerpos locos and watercolors exhibits: Galeria Tonantzin will feature two exhibits for the month of August – “Cuerpos Locos (Wild Bodies)” and “Lee Taiz Watercolors.” “Cuerpos Locos” is a series of surreal figurative work done by Liesa Lietzke, Heather Morgan and Carmen Ogden. A reception open to the public will be Aug. 10 from 4 to 7 p.m. with a book reading by Lee and Lincoln Taiz at 5 p.m. They will read from “Libra: The Cat That Saved Silicon Valley,” a sci-fi story set in the silicon age.
