Yes, the rumors are true. I was asked to take over the head sports job here at the Free Lance.
I know what you are thinking. “Why all the changes there?” “What are you guys doing.”
When manager Felipe Alou joined the Giants, he summed it up best, saying that the team had a chance to possibly win something with the management in place.
“I saw the club getting better and better and they were getting some good free agents and making some good trades,” Alou said. “When the opportunity came for me to say yes, I said yes right away.”
I realize that I have big shoes to fill. And it is with trepidation and excitement that I come to you.
The former sports editor was a close friend and almost like a mentor to me. In no way did I seek to take anything away from him.
And I still consider him a good writer, and know with the diverse talents he has, he will be fine. And I wish him well.
I know he was and is well respected in the community for his commitment to providing great coverage of all the local sports that matter most. It is often an underappreciated job, but it is important to recognize the success of local athletes and teams.
That is something I have always strived to do and plan to continue doing here. As the former sports editor for the last two and a half years of the Morgan Hill Times, which is also owned by Pacific Sierra Publishing, I saw the newspaper grow and win several awards.
Hopefully, we can continue that success here. Working at a small newspaper like the Times helped me get a taste of many different things, not just sports.
I actually got my start in journalism with the Free Lance working as a stringer covering sports and news stories.
Although there are several new faces here, it seems like a good group, and I am looking forward to working with them and with everyone in the community.
Many of you already know me, and I am looking forward to meeting many of you. Between covering, playing and watching sports, sports has pretty much been my life.
Although I have been doing this for awhile, it seems there is always something new to learn. I am always open to any comments, questions and criticisms you may have as is the rest of the staff at the Free Lance. Remember if you don’t voice your concerns, they may not get voiced.
I enjoy doing stuff graphically and doing some creative layouts with the pages. If you have any photos or graphics, please feel free to send them to us. I can’t get everything in, but would like to get what I can in.
My goal is to provide a wide variety of coverage that you have come to expect for all the local sports. Please call me after games to report your scores and highlights if you don’t see me at the game. If I’m not in, please leave a message on my voice mail and I will pick it up later.
Normally, I will be here late, so give me a call at almost any hour of the day. Also feel free to send me any updated stats or team information as they come in.
There are several new sporting items I would like to add to the daily repertoire as well.
I hope you will be able to open your hearts and befriend me like you have my predecessor. It is only with your help and support that the Free Lance can continue to provide you with the great coverage you have come to enjoy.
